Sydney (ANTARA News) - The leaders of 21 APEC member countries have promised to give full support to Indonesia as president of the 13rd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in Bali December 2-14, 2007
The commitment of the leaders attending the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) forum was indicated in a draft declaration on
climate change, energy security and clean development, Antara
correspondent in Sydney said in his report on Saturday.
The declaration will be officially issued by the leaders of APEC on the
last day of their 15th summit at the Sydney Opera building on Sunday
(Sept 9).
Australian Prime Minister John Howard as the summit`s host and the 19
other leaders said they agreed to include the issue on climate change
in a "Sydney Declaration" as an international consensus in the face of
global warming.
In the draft declaration, the leaders of APEC member countries said
some of those involved in UNFCCC agreed to work effectively and
constructively toward enacting regulation in the run up to the year
2012.
"We agree to work for the achievement of a common perception on the
objective of reducing long-term aspirational global emission to make
way for the enactment of international regulation in the run up to the
year 2012," the leaders said in the draft declaration concerned.
They also appreciated the efforts of Japan and Canada which proposed a
long-term global objective and welcomed the US initiative to facilitate
the meeting of main economic members to arrive at detailed contribution
to global arrangements in 2012 under the framework of UNFCCC.
The leaders also pledged to support the UN Secretary General`s
initiative to make a high level activity for climate change and reached
an agreement to cooperate well bilaterally, regionally and globally for
the sake of clean development by setting up a UN climate process forum
for further international negotiations on climate
change.
In the declaration, the leaders of APEC member countries reiterated
their commitment together with the entire international communities to
push for the achievement of a global solution to the issue of global
climate change.
Without any prejudice on other fora, the leaders also included an
action agenda in the declaration that emphasized the importance of
reforming energy efficiency through embodying aspirational APEC region
objectives in reducing the intensity of energy until the year 2030. (*)
