NIGERIA - Army bombs communities
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) destroyed at least two Chevron pipelines in Nigeria's Delta state. The Nigerian army's Joint Task Force responded to the bombings by launching counter attacks affecting thousands of community members. "I have seen over 5000 people displaced, over 2000 people looking for where to hide and 1000 people dead," said Dr. Chris Ekiyor, the leader of the Ijaw Youth Council.

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth, Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has described the outcome of the landmark suit instituted by Ken Saro Wiwa Jnr and other Ogonis accusing Shell of complicity in the execution of author and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa  and other Ogoni leaders in 1995, among other human rights abuses, as a significant milestone in the search for justice in the bloody oil fields of the Niger Delta.

A bloody World Environment Day in the Peruvian Amazon Indigenous organizations call for support from the international community

On April 9, local communities began what they call an "indefinite strike" hroughout the Peruvian Amazon region to protest the Peruvian Congress' failure to review six government decrees that endanger the rights of indigenous peoples. These decrees were issued by the Presidency in the framework of the implementation of the Free Trade
Agreement signed with the United States, and pave the way to opening up the Amazon region to socially and environmentally destructive industries such as mining and oil exploitation.

Costa Rica president says no to oil exploration

President Oscar Arias this week has affirmed his commitment against oil exploration in Costa Rica.

Speaking in front of the Legislative Assembly Monday afternoon to promote a bill regarding rural aqueducts, the president took the opportunity to quell speculation that Costa Rica would open its land and sea up for oil exploration.
